CBD and THC are two cannabinoids that are found in cannabis. There are numerous other cannabinoids in the plant, and they all work together to have an impact on our bodies. THC and CBD are particularly important though because they are two of the more powerful cannabinoids. They bind to the CB1 receptors in the body, and are both known to have hugely beneficial effects.
What is THC?
THC stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol, and it is a psychoactive compound. In essence, this is the part of cannabis that gets you high. THC has a powerful impact on the body when it is inhaled, but that impact does not last long. If it is consumed in edibles, it takes longer to work, but the effects last longer. THC can also help with pain relief, and it has anti-seizure effects and calming effects, but the ‘high’ that is associated with it is the main thing that people talk about.
THC works alongside CBD and amplifies some of the effects of CBD.
What is CBD?
CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound. If it is consumed or inhaled it actually takes some of the edge off the THC high. It is an anticonvulsant and it also works to help people sleep, makes them more calm, and is thought to help with certain kinds of chronic pain, as well as other conditions.
CBD will not get you high, and in many parts of the world, it is considered perfectly legal, where THC is a controlled substance. In the United States, the law is complex. Some states say that all forms of cannabis are illegal, and treat CBD as being the same as THC. Some states allow people to buy CBD legally. If you aren’t sure what the law is in your state, then it is worth checking before trying to buy any CBD online.
How CBD and THC work together
Both CBD and THC have quite similar molecular structures. They are also both quite similar in their chemical makeup to the endocannabinoids that the body makes itself. The two compounds can bind with neurotransmitters in the brain and in the immune system and will help to regulate certain messages being sent out by the nervous system. When THC and CBD are taken together, CBD will prolong the length of time that the THC effects are felt, because it inhibits the process that breaks down THC in the liver. In addition, CBD can reduce some of the psychoactive effects of THC.
There is some evidence to suggest that a combination of THC and CBD can, if injected into certain kinds of tumors, break those tumors down. This research is still in the early stages, however, and it is not clear if the treatment method would work in real world conditions, or how a suitable delivery mechanism would be created. It is clear, however, that there are some promising properties to these cannabinoids, and that they are worthy of having more in depth research carried out on them.
